Academy of Natural Sciences

Here is our field trip in pictures from beginning to end.  It was so much fun.  Enjoy.

The bumpy bus ride to Philly

The first place we went was the Inside Outside Room

Ava counted 15 fish in the pond.

 Tarantulas
"Beach Time"

 Cockroaches and Millipedes

 Lunchtime

We did some drawing. Below is what we saw, above is what we did.  Quite Impressive!!!

An Owl Butterfly

The last thing we did at the Museum was go to a hands on classroom and learned about habitats.
Bearded Dragon Lizard-- desert habitat

Copper Hawk--forest habitat

Opossum --city habitat

In a rare event, the museum's library was open to the public.  We saw books that were huge in size and over 200 years old.
As you can tell the trip was so busy that some of us fell asleep on the way home.  That is a sign of a great trip.

When we arrived home to our classroom the  chicken eggs finally arrived.  We will be hatching 3 different types of eggs this year. We have light blue eggs, light brown eggs and dark brown eggs.  The students will learn about the life cycle of the chicken through this hands-on learning experience.  Keep your fingers crossed that at least one will hatch.  I will keep you posted.  It will take 21 days to hatch.

A week in review

First thing Monday morning we met with Mrs. DeSantis' class in the library for our beginning science lesson on seed observation.  We rotated between 4 different station and made observation and recorded them in our science journals.
Tuesday was Earth Day.  We learned about our dairy collection in school and sorted our recyclables into crushables and stackables.  We also wore to remind us special recycled Terracycle bracelets.  Do you know we are close to reaching $1,000.00 of cash for our trash this school year!!! Wow!!!

On Wednesday  we played Head of The Class with our --nk glide words.

Thursday was take your child to work day. This was a great day to work in group and practice some of our cooperative learning skills with educational games.

Next Week:

Wear the green shirt that was given to you earlier in the school year for our class trip on Tuesday.

Worms and Peeps

The students have been delving a bit further into science within the past 2 weeks.  We learned about living vs. non living.  It is all to get our scientist minds prepared for our big Science investigations starting as soon as we get back from our mini break.

One of the first things we did was examine earthworms.  One was real (living) while the other was a candy gummy worm (non-living). We worked in groups to explore their movements, measure them, and just observe.

Next week we will look closer at seeds using our 5 senses and do some planting.  Other parts of our science unit include making aquariums and terrariums.  We will learn about guppies, millipedes and pill bugs.

Congratulations to all of you for your newest member of your family.  Your child adopted a Peep on Wednesday.  It was so much fun.  We designed bedrooms, read to them during their nap, measured and weighed them, wrote instructions for a babysitter.

We also had a math egg hunt.  Since the weather was so chilly we had our hunt in the library.

Happy Easter.
