Long Weekend

I have sent home next week's homework packet for your child to work on before the week begins.  I did not want them to have do 2 pages on Tuesday.

This week we have been "opinionated" on purpose.  We have begun our writing unit on opinions.  I always find it interesting why the students like a certain item.  The reasons they use to support their opinion are priceless.

How is the word study going?  The assessment will be on Tuesday.  It is my hopes that they are getting faster and faster "building the words with their tiles" than the first day we started.  In class they are getting better.  There is no one right way to practice theses words.  The Words Their Way program has students building the words and finding the patterns in the words using the letter tiles.  If you have another way you want to study with your child that is fine too.

In math, we are finishing up on Module 3 of the EngageNY. Soon we will say goodbye to measurement and onto place value.  On Wednesday, Mrs. Barbara Beske from achievethecore.org will be visiting our classroom to see how the students are doing with the program.  She will model a lesson on tens and ones with the class.

In reading, we are learning about character traits of our characters in our books.   We are also becoming more aware of how a character changes throughout the course of a book, from happy to sad to happy again.  The students are also enjoying sharing their reading with their partners too.

The students also learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  We made portraits of him with step by step directions.  They are proudly hanging up on our bulletin board outside our classroom.  I will take pictures of them and put the on the blog next week.

Welcome Back

It is 2015.  Can you believe it?  It seems like just yesterday that we were all wondering what was going to happen when the clock struck midnight for 2000.  Boy, I guess I am dating myself now.

This week in school was all about getting ourselves back to the routine of school and new expectations for the coming months.  We are going to be 2nd graders soon.

Here are some things to look for and watch over at home.

1. First and LAST name on all papers.  Along with our magic number.

2. Setting goals for ourselves at school.  I asked the students to write, in their opinion, what book they would like to read (independently) this year; something they wanted to learn more about this year, and something I want to get better at this year.

3.  We are one full week into our new math program.  What do you think? When you have a minute shoot me an email about the changes you see at home.  What are your feelings about the homework?

4. Word study (aka spelling).  The letter tiles were sent home earlier this week.  The vowels are in one color and the consonants in another.  That helps with patterns and also distinguishing lowercase letters (example: the n from the u).  Your child's word lists will be sent home on Monday.

We tried to "fool" our math partner with measurements.  Which one was longer than or shorter than?



We work with ah partner to write out our answers.




Once again we partner up with our math partner to discover and measure with our centimeter cubes.  We found out that a centimeter cube is = to 1 cm.

In this activity we took turns rolling dice. One partner rolled and got a number.  They would take that many cubes and line it up next to a centimeter ruler.  Then the partner would roll and add their number to the existing number thus making a number sentence.  For example: 6+3=9.  The students would then see that the end point would equal the same as the amount of cubes.  Just a twist and non- threatening way to add.  Pretty clever.
