A week in pictures

We observed each day the caterpillar in it chrysalis.
When we came back from school on Thursday... look what we found.

We released it at recess time.

The end of Summer

This week we began our handwriting practice in class.  I am carefully watching to make sure the letter formations are correct.  Please remember that the letters DO NOT start from the bottom.  NO LETTER or NUMBER is formed correctly starting from the baseline line (bottom line).

I am happy to say that each child has been assessed at their current reading level.  So we all have a starting point and we are not looking back.  It is onward and upward in our reading abilities. Speaking of reading, please make sure to ask your child comprehension questions after they get done reading their just right book to you each night.  Comprehension is the toughest part to grasp in first grade but with practice it will make a HUGE difference.

On Thursday we celebrated Constitution Day.  If you would like to see where we learned some of our information, check out these YouTube videos.

Word Study words will be sent home with your child on Day 1 of the cycle.  Directions will be attached on how you can help your child at home each week with their specific word pattern they are learning about.

Next week:  Apple investigations

1st cycle completed

The first 6 days or cycle 1 has been very successful.  The students have been learning the routines of the classroom and the rules of the school.

In reading, the students have their just right books and are busy building their reading fluency and stamina.

In math, we are beginning to build our math fluency with groups of 5.  Your child is beginning to see numbers within numbers.  For example, 5 has the number bonds of 4 and 1, 3 and 2, 0 and 5. Imagine, we are only in the first week of school, what will they be able to do months from now?  I can't wait.

In writing we have begun our narrative unit.  The class is seeing the difference between writing a story about a pea pod (a big idea) and writing about a small moment of time (a pea in the pod). Having the students relate their stories to a pea allows them to begin to write rich, detailed stories rather than more general stories.

Don't forget:
to send in a pair of earbuds for your child to use with our i Pads.
to wear sneakers on Monday for Gym class
to have your child sneakers double knotted when they come to school.  (this helps me throughout the  day..... believe me... Thanks a bunch)

Next week: Constitution Day, our initial first grade wide assembly with Ms. Black, and Monday night football with the Eagles

Thank you to all the parent who came to Back to School Night.  I enjoyed meeting all of you.  We had a great turnout.
