Last week we learned all about owls. We made small non-fiction books about them. We even made a recycling project about them. They are made on old magazine journals.
This week we turned our non-fiction fact finding onto spiders. Did you know that the male black widow spider does not eat and only lives for a few months. It is the female spider that is so dangerous. Also the smallest spider is about the size of a speck of dust while the largest spider can be about the size of a dinner plate. Don't worry.... none of those spiders live near us.
We used our spider theme this week to practice our word study patterns. Check out these fancy spiders.
Next week we will learn bat facts.
In math we are beginning to learn about the patterns that math fact families make. Some students are already noticing the turn around facts (4+6=10 and 6+4=10). Don't forget to practice with your child +0, +1, and +2 math facts for their fluency. This week we learned about doubles facts and doubles plus 1.
In writing we are focusing our writing on "how to" books. We are writing about 18 minutes independently each day. Today we learned sequencing words (first, next, then, last, finally) to add to our writing.
FYI... I will not be in school on Thursday and Friday. I will be presenting at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Conference in Atlantic City. I will check my email as much as possible.
