May is approaching

The month of May is just a few days away and we are so busy.  Your children have been very busy poets creating wonderful original works.  You will be able to hear them read them aloud at our Coffeehouse Poetry Celebration on Friday, May 3rd at 10:15.  ALL ARE WELCOME.
Next week we will also be participating in ACES walk on Wednesday.  Please make sure your child wears comfortable shoes on that day.  We will be walking outside (weather permitting) for about 20 minutes.
If you have not had a chance to look at your child’s 3rd marking period report card they are available on Genesis.
The field trip was a great success.  Thanks to the Lumberton PTA and you for your support of this trip.  The students had a great time.

Enjoy the sun this weekend.  I hope you get to go outside and play.

So many exciting things are happening in our classroom.

First, we were fantastic at our 1st grade musical performance “Getting’ down with Mama Goose”, if I do say so myself.  I was very proud of the class as they performed their songs.  I think we may have started several “budding singers” careers.
The class is also getting excited about our upcoming field trip on TUESDAY, APRIL 23rd to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. Please make sure your child wears their special white pirate shirt you received at the beginning of the school year.  I placed each child’s shirt in the treasure chest they received at Back to School Night.  This will make it easy to locate the class amongst all the others that will be attending the museum that same day.  Also please make sure you child brings in a bag lunch that day.  We would like everything to be disposable, no lunch boxes please.
Late on Friday afternoon, our chicken eggs arrived.  Yes, it is true, we will be trying to hatch some chickens.  We received 19 eggs. We have: Blue Orpington, Blue Laced R Wyandotte, Golden Cuckoo Marans, Lavender Orpington, Partridge Penedesenca, and Slamon Faverole. It will take 21 days to hatch so I will keep you posted.  Since the eggs came so late, I will share with the class on Monday what the chickens will look like all mature.  The fun has begun.  It is my hope that you will be able to see them in person during our curriculum and learning/art show in mid-May.
We are getting our poetry down on paper this past week.  We have learned how to write acrostic, Ask me why, colors, senses, and action poems. We are poets and some of us did not even know it.
Hope you are enjoying your child reading to you each night.  It is encouraging to see all the growth this year.

A few things this week

Well, I think Spring has sprung and we went right into Summer.  The days are getting hotter and we have only 54 more days of school.  Wow were did it go?  I want to blog to you early this week to let you know of a few things that are going on.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, the class will be working with Mr. Josh (our custodian) out in the courtyard.  Since we look at it so much through our classroom windows we thought it might be a good idea to have the children help spruce it up to make it look nicer.  So, if you child comes home with a bit of dirt between their fingernails, you will know where it came from.
Word Study will be over a 2 week span.  We will have 2 different lists but this week’s words will be assessed on Monday not Friday.  Yellow Word Study books can also be brought in on Monday not Friday.
I will not be in school on Wednesday through Friday of this week.  Mr. Schwartzmann will be our substitute for all the days.  He knows the class and is familiar with our classroom routine.  Homework will be sent home as usual.  Daily “just right” reading books will also come back and forth.
On Thursday, the class will be practicing 2 times in one day.  We will practice in the morning and the afternoon.  Please dress your child in layers.  It is very hot on stage.
As you know, we are going on a field trip.  If you are interested in helping to chaperone, please let me know in writing.  To make things fair, I will put all the names of those interested into a hat and pick 4 to come.  Please let me know by Thursday, April 11th.  I will let you know by Monday, April 15th if you have been chosen.
Hope you get outside and enjoy the sun and nice weather.
