Apples, apples, everywhere apples

We spent today learning about apples.  We learned about them in honor of John Chapman's birthday.  He is better known as Johnny Appleseed.  We were able to taste test apples, of course, and even apple pie but most importantly we did some apple measurements.  Here are some pictures of us in action.
We measured the weight of our group's apple.

We made observations about our apples.

We measured the circumference of the apple with string and then measured the string with cubes.

We ate apple pie.  YUMMY!!

Helping at home with math

As the year begins I would like to suggest some activities that you can do with your child at home to increase their number sense with math.  At Meet Your Teacher Night I gave you a paper containing 6 math terms your child should know for the Common Core.

The biggest one I can suggest for this time of the school year is subitizing. Subitizing is "instantly seeing how many." Whether we are using a ten frame to count with or our own fingers students need to be able to show a number quickly rather than counting each finger until they get to the desired number.

Ways you can practice at home:

1.  Say a number from 0-10 to your child and ask them to show you that many fingers.  Your child should be able to show the desired number without counting each finger.  If they can not, keep practicing until your child can just produce the number without counting individual fingers.

2. Roll dice with them.  Your child should be able to say the number rolled rather than counting each individual dot on the die.  If not keep, practice until your child can recognize each side of the die without counting but rather just by instantly seeing it.

When your child can "instantly see how many" addition, counting on, and subtraction will become easier.

Don't forget Picture Day is Tuesday.  NO SCHOOL on Thursday.

Homework begins

Thanks to all the parents who attended Meet Your Teacher Night.  Our class had a great turn out.  I was thankful that many of you attended so I could put a face to the many stories I have already heard about you.  Don't worry all the stories are good ones.

Just a reminder... homework will be sent home starting on Monday.  The packet is due back on Friday.  Please have your child complete one page a day.  The packet may be difficult at first but once your child gets into the swing of things and how this is formatted, homework will be a breeze. If at any time you have a question about the homework, please do not hesitate to email me.

Hope you enjoyed a sunny Sunday.  Go Eagles on Monday Night Football.

The first 3 days of school

The 2014-2015 school year is underway and we have been busy as bees.  I am so glad that many of you are following the blog.  This is going to be my main means of sharing with you what happens in our classroom and hopefully answers some of your questions you never get answered from your child of..... "What did you do today in school?"

We eat breakfast.

We take brain breaks on GoNoodle.com

We work on learning our classroom rules.

We paint.

We measure.
We explore with math.

We write in journals.

We write stories.

We earn golden tickets throughout the days for Fun Friday.  The golden tickets are part of the behavior system in place this school year.  The class has decided on the classroom rules and the rewards and discipline for breaking the rules.  At the end of the week the students count up their golden tickets and turn them in for a special activity.  The more tickets you earn the earlier you can pick when it comes time to choose the activity they want to participate in on Fun Friday. During Fun Friday some of the centers the children can work on are pictured below.

 Art Center

 Math Center

 Science Center

 Barbies and many more.

At the end of each week the Philadelphia Eagles play, Miss Gizelbach's class comes to visit and we  do some Eagles Math.

I hope this gives you a brief glimpse into what we do in school.  I look forward to meeting all of you at Meet Your Teacher Night.

Snack

In first grade your child will have snack in the afternoon.  I try to have it around 2 o'clock (depending on the "special" we have for the day).  Each child is responsible for their own snack each day.  A snack consists of something small and healthy to eat and a drink if desired. I will have emergency snacks on hand if your child forgets.
