Helping at home with math

As the year begins I would like to suggest some activities that you can do with your child at home to increase their number sense with math.  At Meet Your Teacher Night I gave you a paper containing 6 math terms your child should know for the Common Core.

The biggest one I can suggest for this time of the school year is subitizing. Subitizing is "instantly seeing how many." Whether we are using a ten frame to count with or our own fingers students need to be able to show a number quickly rather than counting each finger until they get to the desired number.

Ways you can practice at home:

1.  Say a number from 0-10 to your child and ask them to show you that many fingers.  Your child should be able to show the desired number without counting each finger.  If they can not, keep practicing until your child can just produce the number without counting individual fingers.

2. Roll dice with them.  Your child should be able to say the number rolled rather than counting each individual dot on the die.  If not keep, practice until your child can recognize each side of the die without counting but rather just by instantly seeing it.

When your child can "instantly see how many" addition, counting on, and subtraction will become easier.

Don't forget Picture Day is Tuesday.  NO SCHOOL on Thursday.
