Back to school after break

Welcome back from Spring Break.  I hope all of you had a great time.  Although the weather was not so great we did get a some teasers of good weather.

This past week has been busy in our class.  We have been practicing with the rest of first grade for our First Grade Music Assembly.  We will have a few more practices before our big show on Tuesday for the school (2 pm) and then Wednesday (7 pm) for the night show.

In math we are finishing up our 5th module in math. This week were made connections from our halves and fourths/quarters to how that relates to time on a clock.

In writing we have started a new writing unit.  This time we are learning how to write realistic fiction. Realistic fiction is a story with a made up character that has realistic adventures.  We are learning to write using pronouns.  It has been a while since we have written stories.  The class is loving it.  The 5 parts of our realistic fiction stories include: introducing the character, setting, problem, fix the problem/resolution, and ending.

In reading we are going to begin comparing non-fiction and fiction stories about the same topics. The venn diagram along with connections to books will be taught.

Earth day is next week but we got a jump start on it today.  With the help of Mr. Josh we got our hands dirty and planted some canna bulbs.

In science class we are preparing our classroom for our organism unit.  We made aquariums for our freshwater organisms (guppies and snails) that should be arriving later next week.  Next week we will also make woodland terrariums for our insects (millipedes and pillbugs).
