It is a new year. Happy New Year.
Let me tell you the new things happening in our classroom starting this week.
Homework:
A packet will be sent home every Monday (or Tuesday if we are not in school). DO 1 page per day. Do not attempt to try to do the whole packet in one sitting. It will be too much. Turn it in on FRIDAY ONLY. Each page is labeled as to what day to do it on. Look in the upper corner. Don't forget to put your name on it. The comprehension page on the last page can be done any day prior to Friday's turn in. You may read it to your child and then have them answer the questions. It is my hope that soon they will be able to read the passage independently but not just yet. We are working on finding information in our passage that tell more about the stories we read.
Sight words and fluency packet. Please practice them daily. It should take about 30 seconds for both sides. I will check them with your child 1x per week or more if needed. Many came into school prepared to read them. Thank you for you help at home with it.
Math- please use the examples and models on the paper. It is crucial that the students draw and explain their thinking if the directions state to do so. That is how I can check for their true understanding of the concept.
Just right books. I am about 1/2 through the class in the DRA reading assessments. We have come a long way since September. Some children have moved up in their levels and some are right at the cusp of starting a new level. Keep practicing at home.
Word Study- Earlier this week each child took a spelling inventory to find out their level of spelling in their word study. Your child will be sent home with their new word patterns on Monday. We will follow the same procedure as before. I just wanted to give you a heads up on their new levels, same levels, or a review of a level depending on your child's test result. Do not fear if it seems like your child has skipped or regressed a level. It is okay, we will continue to work on this.
Fun Friday... it will take 7 tickets to participate. The bar has been raised.
